John hears the voice of a mighty angel and then seven thunders and their voices (Revelation 10:1-3). In other words, he is able to understand and comprehend what is being said. John wants to write down what he hears, but a voice from heaven says, “Seal up those things which the seven thunders uttered, and write them not.” In other words, John is not allowed to write down what is being said. There is no point in speculating about what is being spoken here; we do not know, and what is more, it is deliberately sealed by God. Who is speaking here? We do not know. But in any case, it is a voice speaking from the heavenly throne room and therefore a voice with divine authority! One thing is certain: we can learn from this that we do not know all of God's counsel. God only reveals a portion of His plan for the end times to us — especially the part that allows us to live and die blessed and comforted. No more and no less. Not all our curiosity is satisfied. In any case, let us be very cautious about all kinds of predictions and prophecies. We only know in part; there is much more that we do not know, which God deliberately keeps hidden from us. We have God's revealed Word, and that is enough. For a Christian, it comes down to living by and from God’s Word and leaving all our matters in His hands. We know that Christ is the Good Shepherd who knows each of His sheep. He knows their names, how they are wired, and their needs. We know that we have a heavenly Father, who is a God of lovingkindness, abundant goodness, and righteousness. We know that He will never abandon what He has begun. We know that the Spirit of the Father and the Son lives in us, illuminating and comforting us. Let that be enough. When we truly believe in the Lord, we have the faith to leave all things in His hands. If we have personally experienced the grace available to sinners like us, we should have no problem leaving everything in God's care. And in the meantime, we continue taking one step at a time, following Christ and living by grace.
