Last week, in Revelation 7:9-17, we saw how everyone in heaven falls down with great reverence before the Lord and worships Him... An incredible heavenly liturgy. Despite its imperfections, our earthly liturgy can already share in this...
But how is it possible that in heaven all evil has vanished and God can be worshiped so peacefully? In verse 15c, we read: “He who sits on the throne will dwell among them.” That gives the first part of the answer. God is like a safe tent over them. That is why there is no more evil there; they are under God's protective wings. God dwells among them, providing fellowship, peace, guidance, and protection.
But there is more, which allows God to be worshiped in perfect peace and harmony. Why is there peace, with no hunger or thirst? We read in verse 17: “The Lamb who is in the center of the throne will shepherd them and lead them to springs of living water.”
He who was the good shepherd here on earth will also be the good shepherd in the future. He who gave His life as complete atonement for our sins and guides us through the great tribulation in this earthly life will certainly continue His work as shepherd on the other side of the Jordan. He knows His own, and they know Him. Many blessings come with this good shepherd. We read here about being fed and receiving water. Where Christ feeds, there is only the best food in abundance. The same applies to the drink He gives us. We read about “living springs,” in other words, living, clear water. What we read here points to the perfect state of the glorified saints in heaven. There is no lack, but life and peace in abundance, in endless joy and perfect happiness.
Finally, we read, “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.” Here on earth, there was sin, misery, and oppression. But in heaven, all of that is gone. God Himself wipes away every tear, and they will never return. Sorrow is transformed into everlasting joy.
Let us keep our eyes fixed on this glorious future and not allow ourselves to be overwhelmed by our sorrow in this world. Here we are cross-bearers, but there in heaven, there is only blessing in Christ. This glorious future fills us with hope and gives us the courage to carry on.
